Sensational season for these boys – whilst playing up an age for the entire season they have gained plaudits from every team that they have faced. Whilst winning has never been our focus these boys have managed to record a victory against all bar one team this season and that team saw games that ended in a draw. The Christmas tournament was a highlight for some of the boys as they finished runners up in a competition with 9 teams all older than themselves – some fantastic football being played.
Playing football in an attractive manner, passing the ball up and down the field encouraging a style that technical allowed us to compete against teams physically stronger – but playing the right way proved football can be the winner. Starting from the back with two strong keepers in ‘shot stopper’ Sonny and ‘safe hands’ Frank – allowing them time out on pitch when switching roles encouraged passing the ball from defence. A strong back line of ‘quick’ Harry, ‘versatile’ Josh and ‘solid’ Oscar providing protection and the trust for our creative players in ‘tricky’ Jake, ‘playmaker’ Finn and ‘competitive’ Finley to be providers for ‘energetic’ Freddie, ‘prolific’ Charlie and ‘step over’ Lewis. That said the boys have learnt to play a number of positions this year and it would be hard to label any of them positionally. Understanding each other’s positions has been fundamental to the team’s success.
Whilst continuing to play in the Dorset League, moving up the divisions in ability, the team was invited to play friendly High Performance fixtures – this has been a huge challenge for the team but a great challenge and an honour to have been invited.
The team continues to be sponsored by Top Nurseries. Tops have sponsored this group of boys since Under 5’s and it is great to have such financial support that kits the boys our each season – looking smart in their kit every week is a part of the etiquette of being a successful team. The team also continues to be one of the best supported teams in the age group home and away our supporters out number our opposing teams – vocally supporting the boys with positivity but also supporting the coaches by setting up goals, corner flags and respect lines before and after games.
We continue to train on a Saturday mornings with the Under 9’s Spitfires and the coaching team of Nathan and Scott (J), for the Rockets and Andy and Mike for the Spitfires encourage fun, social training with a purpose for improvement. The four coaches can take great pride in the teams achievements and I certainly couldn’t do it all with out them.
On a personal level I also take great pride from watching the boys play the football they do. Next season will be our 6th season together and I am sure they will continue to grow and go from strength to strength – forging great friendships and developing their football as aside to the enjoyment they have playing this beautiful game.
