U11 Colts 3-0 Wool and Winfrith

Having come back from being 2-0 down to draw 3-3 with Wool and Winfrith when we played them in the league a few weeks ago confidence was high going into this league cup game.
Wool thought they'd taken the upper hand when they won the coin toss and changed ends, meaning they'd get to attack downhill in the second half. By contrast to the last couple of weeks the Stones started extremely well, keeping the ball well and putting Wool under good pressure when they didn't have it. This bright start was rewarded just 6 minutes into the game when a big kick from keeper George cleared the Wool defensive line putting Sam through on goal, who stayed calm and dribbled into the 18 yard box before cooly slotting the ball across the keeper with his weaker foot to give George his second assist of the season. Wool began to grow into the game after this however Broadstone defended extremely well as a team, with Ollie protecting the back 4 brilliantly.  Wool did however force 2 saves from George during the half, he clawed a cross off of the line directly from a corner with a strong right hand, and then he pulled off a contender for save of the season so far; Wool shot from the keepers right from the edge of the box, the ball was destined for George's top left corner until he flew across the goal and tipped the ball around the post with his equally strong left hand.  Shortly after this new signing Alfie came off of the bench and instantly added a new dimension to our attack, with quick feet and good vision for a pass Broadstone began to create more chances. One of these forced the Wool keeper to come out of his box to clear a clever through ball, his clearance however fell to Alfie around 25 yards out, who took a touch and then shot around the keeper, finishing into the bottom left corner. We knew getting ahead whilst shooting downhill would be important and Joseph did a good job of finishing this off 1 minute before half time. Again Alfie was involved, having dribbled the ball to the bi-line, his cut back found Joseph around 6 yards out from goal. Despite being under high pressure from defenders Joseph took a couple of touches to create space for himself and then smashed the ball into the top right corner. Half time, 3-0 up.
During the half time team talk it was clear the lads understood that the defensive job this half would be difficult, with Wool having nothing to lose. Wool's intentions were obvious after 5 miuntes, with them looking for through balls along the ground and over our defence very often. However Broadstone gave one of their best defensive performances of the season, dealing with everything Wool threw at them brilliantly. We also created chances ourselves, but with fewer players in support as they were working so hard defensively, we struggled to really test the keeper. With 5 minutes left of the game George made his only real save of the half, pulling off a 'Wayne Hawes special', firstly attempting to save a low close range effort with his feet, but when the ball slipped through he was quick to collapse on the ball before it trickled over the line.
A very well deserved win for the U11 Colts, really backing up their individual improvements with such a good team performance, working  very well together all over the pitch.
